City Year Sacramento - Opening Day!

On Friday, Sept. 28th, the City Year Sacramento AmeriCorps members met at the steps of the State Capitol to launch into their “year of service to our city, our schools, and our students.” We as a city are lucky to have these 66 AmeriCorps members as they will seek to motive, inspire, and support our youth in an effort to stay on track and succeed.

The City Year AmeriCorps members work with students that are at risk of dropping out based on three early warning indicators of: poor attendance, disruptive behavior and course failure in math and English. They support these students in three main ways which are attendance monitoring and engagement, socio-emotional support, and support in math and English.

The day’s speakers: Jorge Aguilar (SCUSCD Superintendent), Tina Nguyen (City Year Sacramento Alum), Kari MacDonald (Deputy Director of AmeriCorps), Kyriakos Tsakopoulos (Keynote Speaker), and Julie Quinn (City Year Board President) offered tremendous insight into the value these AmeriCorps members bring to our city while offering encouragement and inspiration to create a lasting impact in Sacramento.
